went last spring around 7am and had the paths mostly to myself. entry was free for teh outer garden, only paid a few hundred yen for one inner section. honestly early morning beats afternoon crowds.
yeah the early slot is the move, i usually aim for opening time at 9 before tour groups hit. the outer bits are free but the inner garden runs about 500 yen and it's cash only at the gate, so bring coins. weekdays are way calmer than weekends
Second this, the momiji season pushes gate time to 8.

bring small bills too, the gate won't break a 1000 yen note

still opens 7 on sat, got there at 7:10 last month and had my pick of seats. coffee's held up, the layout just made the window counter tighter so it feels busier than it is. go before 8 & ur fine
