Pastry prices in Tokyo 2026: what should I actually pay?

check depachika basement floors, better pastries there honestly

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image annelore local ·

depachika's solid but Isetan Shinjuku marks their pastry boxes up 20 to 30 percent vs the same patisserie's own storefront, so compare before u commit

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

The markup is real but it varies by floor placement, the basement counters near the escalators price higher than the back ones. Also worth noting Isetan closes the pastry section down an hour before the store, so go before 7pm or you'll get the picked-over trays.

Mitsukoshi Nihombashi is the one I'd point you to, basement pastries there are solid and less picked over than most. go on a weekday morning around 10, weekends the queue at the popular counters eats 20 min easy.

sweet lab is a bit of a tourist trap now tbh. locals mostly hit the small bakeries in shitamachi, like the ones off kappabashi or in yanaka, where a good croissant runs 280 to 350 yen. sweet lab sits closer to 600 to 800 these days, sometimes more with the seasonal stuff. if u want value, go early morning when places discount the day-old trays.

Image tilli local ·

yanaka is spot on but the day-old trays are mostly the big chains, the small shitamachi bakeries would rather sell out by noon than discount. kappabashi side is better for wholesale-ish pricing if u go before 9.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Image mirjam local ·

yeah agreed, but that day-old tray thing is mostly chain bakeries not the small ones

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image wanda local ·

agreed on the pricing but the day-old discount thing barely applies at proper bakeries, they'd rather sell out. fwiw the markup varies by depachika too, Isetan's basement runs higher than the same shop's own storefront. go before 9 if u want the good stuff.

true, though the storefront markup bites hardest on the gift boxes, loose pastries differ by maybe 50 yen

Takashimaya Tamagawa, same 9am rule.

Daybreak Cafe still worth it in 2026?

fmd_goodDaybreak Cafe · #coffee
used to hit daybreak cafe on weekend mornings before the crowds showed up but havent been since they changed the layout. is the coffee still as good or has it gone full instagram spot in 2026. also do… used to hit daybreak cafe on weekend mornings before the crowds showed up but havent been since they changed the layout. is the coffee still as good or has it gone full instagram spot in 2026. also do they still open at 7 on saturdays

weekday mornings r the move now, sat queue starts around 7:40 & the layout killed the old corner table i used to camp at

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image kim local ·

still opens 7 on sat, got there at 7:10 last month and had my pick of seats. coffee's held up, the layout just made the window counter tighter so it feels busier than it is. go before 8 & ur fine

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down
Image danny local ·

yeah 7:40 is when it flips, before that ur good

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image danny local ·

the window counter thing is real but the back room by the washroom stayed quiet when i went at 7:15

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image sannaulmer local ·

Agree on the 7:10 window, though I'd grab the back room by the washroom since the window counter gets cramped once the sun hits.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image danny local ·

7:10's the sweet spot, pastries go by 9

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image sannaulmer local ·

Coffee quality hasn't slipped but the pastry case got smaller and the seating is more first-come chaos now.
