What's the best time to go so I get both daylight and sunset without a huge queue, and is the north or south observation deck better? Also, is there any pass that covers getting there from Shinjuku Station, or is it just a short walk?

South deck has the better Fuji view in March; go up around 4pm, and it's a 10 min walk from Shinjuku's west exit, no pass needed.

Deck closes at 10:30pm but last lift up is 10pm, and the west exit walk goes quicker via the underground passage under the bus terminal.

Honestly the north deck's usually quieter on weekday mornings, opens at 9:30. No pass covers it since you just walk from the west exit, maybe 10 min. Go early before tour buses show up.

Weekday mornings are indeed calmer, though the north deck faces the bay so you lose the mountain on clear days. Doors actually open at 9:30 sharp, and the lift queue builds fast after 10, so arrive by 9:15. Bring your passport if you want the tourist info desk to stamp it.

North deck, second floor cafe for the sunset gap.

Image kati local ·

True about the quiet mornings, though the lift lobby still fills by mid-morning, so aim for opening sharp.

Skip the observatory queue entirely by grabbing coffee at the free staff cafeteria floor instead, and check the north deck's Shinjuku skyline at dusk.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

I think that cafeteria floor isn't actually open to the public, so maybe double check before counting on it.

Image sabrine local ·

Yeah you're right, it's staff only, but the public cafe one floor down is fine and way less crowded.

That cafeteria's staff only, badge required.

Daybreak Cafe still worth it in 2026?

fmd_goodDaybreak Cafe · #coffee

weekday mornings r the move now, sat queue starts around 7:40 & the layout killed the old corner table i used to camp at

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image kim local ·

still opens 7 on sat, got there at 7:10 last month and had my pick of seats. coffee's held up, the layout just made the window counter tighter so it feels busier than it is. go before 8 & ur fine

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down
Image danny local ·

yeah 7:40 is when it flips, before that ur good

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image danny local ·

the window counter thing is real but the back room by the washroom stayed quiet when i went at 7:15

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image sannaulmer local ·

Agree on the 7:10 window, though I'd grab the back room by the washroom since the window counter gets cramped once the sun hits.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image danny local ·

7:10's the sweet spot, pastries go by 9

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image sannaulmer local ·

Coffee quality hasn't slipped but the pastry case got smaller and the seating is more first-come chaos now.
