best steakhouses in Tokyo 2026 for a first date?

prime cut is fine but a bit corporate for a first date, i'd do something like bistro or the counter at a yakiniku place in nishi-azabu instead, less pressure & u can actually talk. people mostly meet through work, izakaya circles & friends of friends, apps exist but tinder is seen as kind of a joke here. what surprised me most is how slow things move, lots of group hangouts before anyone is alone together

arrow_drop_up 25 arrow_drop_down

Yeah the group hangout thing is real, a lot of Japanese dates start as goukon or just rolling with the same circle for weeks before it's ever one on one.

tbh the nishi-azabu yakiniku counter call is spot on, though I'd add that a lot of those first meetups actually start at a goukon someone's coworker organizes.

Shinjuku Nichome if they're not the goukon type

more of a second-date thing really

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

The slow pace matches what I've heard from friends there, though I'd say the apps aren't all a joke, Pairs and Omiai are taken seriously by people who actually want a relationship. Tinder is more for casual stuff, so it depends what you're after.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

goukon aside lots of my friends met their partners at konkatsu parties run by city hall, way less pressure than apps

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

Agree, though group hangouts can drag on for months.

For a first date try a teppanyaki counter instead, you get the show and silences feel less awkward. Ngl the goukon thing is real but a lot also start at nomikai then coffee a week later. Also nobody does the door-hold thing here so don't overthink manners.

Teppanyaki works but book the counter early, places like Ukai-tei fill up weeks out and the chef chat carries the date better than the food.

Daybreak Cafe still worth it in 2026?

fmd_goodDaybreak Cafe · #coffee
used to hit daybreak cafe on weekend mornings before the crowds showed up but havent been since they changed the layout. is the coffee still as good or has it gone full instagram spot in 2026. also do… used to hit daybreak cafe on weekend mornings before the crowds showed up but havent been since they changed the layout. is the coffee still as good or has it gone full instagram spot in 2026. also do they still open at 7 on saturdays

weekday mornings r the move now, sat queue starts around 7:40 & the layout killed the old corner table i used to camp at

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image kim local ·

still opens 7 on sat, got there at 7:10 last month and had my pick of seats. coffee's held up, the layout just made the window counter tighter so it feels busier than it is. go before 8 & ur fine

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down
Image danny local ·

yeah 7:40 is when it flips, before that ur good

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image danny local ·

the window counter thing is real but the back room by the washroom stayed quiet when i went at 7:15

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image sannaulmer local ·

Agree on the 7:10 window, though I'd grab the back room by the washroom since the window counter gets cramped once the sun hits.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image danny local ·

7:10's the sweet spot, pastries go by 9

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image sannaulmer local ·

Coffee quality hasn't slipped but the pastry case got smaller and the seating is more first-come chaos now.
