Tokyo market work pay 2026: does it cover rent?

Does it realistically cover a small apartment and bills, or is it strictly pocket money on top of something else?

market stall work around there is mostly part time shifts paid hourly, think 1200 to 1500 yen, not fat day rates. it won't carry a small apartment in shinjuku on its own, rent alone eats it. i'd treat it as top up money & keep a main job, tbh

yeah and shifts are early morning mostly, 5am starts

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Agree, and the early starts mean you can't stack a second shift the same day, so the hourly rate is really your whole ceiling.

That ceiling is real, but some stalls do a short evening cleanup shift too, so you can pick up a bit extra if you ask. Just don't count on it being regular.

the 1200 to 1500 range is before tax too so your take-home lands closer to 1000 an hour

Image kyra local ·

True, plus no benefits or paid leave on those shifts

Image anna local ·

tsukiji shifts go through the outer market too, different rate

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image katrina local ·

honestly the bigger catch is shift length, they cap you around 4 hours so even the good rate stays pocket money

Image yuinaka local ·

Also worth knowing stalls pay daily in cash with no shakai hoken, so you cover your own nenkin and health insurance on top.

Shinjuku rent is brutal even for a shoebox, so expect to share or live further out. Most folks I know doing stall shifts treat it as beer money tbh. maybe ask around the stalls directly for teh real rates

Crumb's shokupan is the sleeper hit, better than the croissants people queue for. Weekends after 9am the line snakes past the corner, so go on a weekday or right at opening.

Line's worse on Saturday, go Sunday instead.

Image wanda local ·

yeah the shokupan sells out by noon too

Shokupan's usually gone by early afternoon too.

the curry pan, grab it before 10

good call, theyre usually down to a couple by 10:30 tbh, and the mentaiko one goes even faster

Weekday opening still means 8am sharp, and the anpan goes before the croissants do.
