Late night pastry runs in Tokyo 2026: which areas are safe?

Nakameguro and Jiyugaoka feel okay to me but I'm less sure once you get past the station side streets. Which parts of Tokyo would you avoid at that hour, and where is it genuinely no problem?

Nakameguro's fine along the Meguro River path but the side streets behind the station go quiet fast. Jiyugaoka is genuinely easy at 11pm, well lit and people still out. I'd skip Roppongi and Kabukicho entirely that late.

Jiyugaoka's shotengai stays lit, back lanes not so much.

Meguro River path gets proper dark past Nakameguro station though.

tbh the koban on the corner helps, cops are usually posted up there til late

yeah the back lanes by the station are fine right after the bars close but dead by midnight, and I'd add Shimokitazawa's south exit to the skip list

the river path is pitch black past the bridge

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Agree on Roppongi, but the back lanes off Gaien-nishi-dori by the 246 underpass are fine, taxis and koban lights the whole way.

Depends on your route but Daikanyama's back lanes toward the Hachiman-dori end stay lit and busy past midnight, unlike the river side.

honestly the stretch along Komazawa-dori toward Sangenjaya is fine, konbini lights and taxis the whole way. the little lanes off Setagaya-dori go dark quick though, i stick to the main road after 10.

Second this, the 7-Eleven stretch near Gakugeidaigaku is the bright bit

Best croquembouche in Tokyo for a birthday in 2026?

Visiting Tokyo next spring and want to surprise my mom with a croquembouche for her 60th. Any patisseries that do a good one, and do I need to order way ahead? Try Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki in Marunouchi, they sometimes take custom piece montee orders a month out.

yeah Aoki's a solid shout but they get slammed around March, so call rather than walk in. We got ours from Esquisse in Kagurazaka last year and they were fine with a month's notice. Just dont let it sit in the car, the caramel goes sticky fast.

Their Marunouchi counter is closed Sundays, so ring the Azabudai Hills shop instead.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Good call, they answer the phone faster too

Worth asking about their smaller 12cm size, since the full tower needs a car and a steady hand on the train.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

A month out, ask for Isabelle at the counter.

ask for her Tue to Thu, shes off Fri

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image veronica local ·

they want 5 days notice for a piece montee & confirm by phone since the web form ignores custom requests

Image nicola local ·

honestly croquembouche isnt really a Tokyo patisserie staple, its more of a French thing. Hidemi Sugino in Kyobashi does gorgeous entremets but not a piece montee like that. tbh for a 60th I'd call Ginza Cozy Corner and see if they'll do a custom choux tower, or ask a hotel pastry chef (Park Hyatt does custom cakes). order 2-3 weeks ahead minimum, and confirm pickup timing since choux goes soft fast.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

the hotel pastry chef route is smart, Shinjuku Granbell and Keio Plaza both do custom choux towers if u ring the pastry desk direct.
