Best quiet garden walks in Tokyo 2026

Which blocks nearby are fine to walk through at 9 or 10pm, and which ones should I loop around instead?

Shinjuku Gyoen, gates shut at 6.

Image akiratan local ·

yeah, last entry is 4:30 though, not 6

Image zenta local ·

The stretch along the Sendagaya side by the Shibuya border gets very dark past 9, so I'd stick to the lit lanes near Hatonomori Shrine instead.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Image kyra local ·

honestly the back lanes toward Yoyogi are fine late, but I'd loop around the darker stretch past the park edge after 9.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down
Image zenta local ·

Agreed on that dark stretch. I'd add that the lanes behind the JR tracks near Chiyoda line overpass stay lit well past 10 because of the station lights, so that's a safe detour. Anything facing the outer moat side goes pitch black early though.

Moat side is fine to Yotsuya until 8ish, then it's lamps out

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Second this, the Tomigaya side stays lit till 11.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

past the park edge is where it gets patchy, those side streets off Uehara-dori have almost no streetlights after 9.

Image roselwoll local ·

sangubashi side stays lit, konno-hachimangu end

Those back lanes are fine but the stretch along the Harajuku police box side goes dead quiet and dim once the shops shut around 8.

Tokyo market work pay 2026: does it cover rent?

Does it realistically cover a small apartment and bills, or is it strictly pocket money on top of something else?
arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

market stall work around there is mostly part time shifts paid hourly, think 1200 to 1500 yen, not fat day rates. it won't carry a small apartment in shinjuku on its own, rent alone eats it. i'd treat it as top up money & keep a main job, tbh

Image elise local ·

yeah and shifts are early morning mostly, 5am starts

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Agree, and the early starts mean you can't stack a second shift the same day, so the hourly rate is really your whole ceiling.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image doreen local ·

That ceiling is real, but some stalls do a short evening cleanup shift too, so you can pick up a bit extra if you ask. Just don't count on it being regular.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image cora local ·

the 1200 to 1500 range is before tax too so your take-home lands closer to 1000 an hour

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image kyra local ·

True, plus no benefits or paid leave on those shifts

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image anna local ·

tsukiji shifts go through the outer market too, different rate

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Image katrina local ·

honestly the bigger catch is shift length, they cap you around 4 hours so even the good rate stays pocket money

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Image yuinaka local ·

Also worth knowing stalls pay daily in cash with no shakai hoken, so you cover your own nenkin and health insurance on top.

Image yuinaka local ·

Shinjuku rent is brutal even for a shoebox, so expect to share or live further out. Most folks I know doing stall shifts treat it as beer money tbh. maybe ask around the stalls directly for teh real rates
