the hours thing is real, they often shut between shows for install week, so check their twitter not just the website
their IG stories update faster than twitter honestly
Shinjuku is right, though the building entrance is easy to miss, look for the small sign next to the coin parking on the second floor.

Best day to visit Ueno Zoo in Tokyo 2026
Tuesday, gates open 9:30 sharp. Monorail's suspended.
Mondays are actually quieter than Tuesdays since the zoo closes Mondays, so the Tuesday crowd is leftover weekend trippers.
fair point but the upside is the animals are calmer after a rest day, so the panda's usually more active in the morning. i'd still aim for right at opening cuz the queue builds within 20 min either way.
that logic tracks, post-holiday backlog hits hard. one thing though, check the school calendar before u book. late january and early feb are exam season so the zoo's basically empty on weekdays, way better than any normal week.
the holiday backlog is the real culprit
thursday mornings are pretty chill imo, most of teh school groups do their trips earlier in the week so it thins out by then. the monorail is still suspended as far as i know, havent seen it running on my last visit. honestly the walk from Ueno Station is only like 10 min through the park, not bad at all

Agree on the 9:30 timing but note the panda house queue still builds fast, so head there first before the Ueno-kōen exit crowds arrive.
yeah 9:30 is the move, the panda queue still fills up fast tho. fwiw the west gate side is quieter if u enter from there instead.
Second this, though rain tends to clear the panda queue.
