Which parts of the park are fine after dark and which should I skip, especially for spotting owls and tanuki? Also is the north entrance by the station still okay at that hour?

North gate's fine, skip the pond path after 9.

only till 9:30 though, gate locks at 10

Pond path's bad because the far side has no lamps past the second bench, so stick to the lit loop.

bring a dim red light not white, the tanuki by the west courts freeze instead of bolting & you'll actually see them

Red light works, white spooks em every time

The stretch toward the shrine is where I've heard owls most, so that's your best bet after 9. Tanuki tend to rustle around the hedges near the west tennis courts, though they bolt if you're loud.

Yep, shrine path's right, though the owls sit higher up near the big camphor tree past the second torii, so look up not straight ahead.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

honestly past the second torii they're usually in the cedar just before the last lantern, not the camphor

Agree on the shrine stretch, though after 9 the owls usually sit in teh tall cedar just before the last lantern, not the camphor. West courts tanuki are out most nights around 10, near the fence gap by the bike racks.

hedges by the west courts, yeah. tanuki den behind the bike racks

Is Funland in Yokohama worth the trip compared to the bigger parks, and how much should I budget for tickets plus food?

funland in yokohama is small, like half a day tops, and the rides are aimed at families with young kids. for a proper day out from central tokyo i'd do yomiuriland instead, keio line from shinjuku gets u there in about 25 min. budget roughly 6000 to 8000 yen for a ride pass plus 2000 to 3000 on food, the park eats are pricey

Image beata local ·

yeah and the keio line gets packed on weekends, go weekday

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image veronica local ·

weekday mornings before 9 are dead quiet too, and the keio line empties out past chofu so grab a seat there

yomiuriland's evening pool and illumination in spring are worth staying for, so don't rush back before dark.
