yeah the base route via kotaku-in is the only way up that early. for tanuki though dont bother climbing, the kobu tunnel path off the otarumi trailhead is where i see them most, headlamp on & quiet

fair point, but the base hike eats the whole 6am window. i usually do the lower loop by the visitor center first, owls are active there before sunrise and it's flat
