Tokyo diner menu prices 2026: what's the local rate?

arrow_drop_up 11 arrow_drop_down

The English menu at Route 9 runs about 100 to 150 yen higher per plate, so a breakfast set is roughly 1,300 to 1,500 yen versus 1,200 on the Japanese board.

Tax is already included on both boards, so it's not that.

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down
Image sabrine local ·

right, so its not the tax, its the menu itself. i think they just print two versions and charge what each crowd will pay. locals never see that one anyway

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Image veronica local ·

yep so its the printed board itself, not the register. they ring up whatever version u ordered from, so pointing at the counter board when u pay keeps it honest. shibuya gets away with it cuz nobody checks

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Fair point, so the gap is pure menu pricing rather than consumption tax. Worth checking whether the register slip shows the reduced 8 percent rate for takeout, since that's where the real discrepancy usually hides.

arrow_drop_up 19 arrow_drop_down

Image serafine local ·

so its baked into the base price on both, which is why the gap looks clean. what gets me is the drinks: my mugicha was 380 on the slip but 450 on the board i pointed at. check ur receipt line by line next time

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Image diana local ·

yeah that tracks, and honestly the gap widens on weekends when they swap in the shumatsu version of the board.

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Ask for the teishoku board behind the counter, that's where the regulars' pricing actually lives.

morning sets before 10am run cheaper at most shibuya diners so go early if u want the real local rate

Second this, 8:30 cutoff though, not 10.

Old Town Gardens Tokyo entry fee 2026, is 500 yen normal?

500 yen is just the normal rate now, most of the decent gardens in town sit in that 300 to 500 range since the last round of price bumps. the tea house is separate, expect maybe 700 to 1000 for matcha and a sweet, and they usually stop serving mid afternoon so dont save it for the end of ur visit

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down
Image isedore local ·

yeah 500 is standard now, we pay the same. one thing though, a lot of these places do a cheap senior rate if u qualify, otherwise it is what it is

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Tea house closes around 4, so go before 3.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Right, and the last entry is usually about half an hour before closing so don't cut it too fine.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

the gate shuts 30 min before, not last entry

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Matcha's 800 at the counter now, cash only.

Agree on the 300 to 500 range, though the bigger strolling gardens have crept past it, Shinjuku Gyoen is 500 and Kyu-Furukawa is 150. Worth noting the teahouse counters here are cash only, cards don't work.

Image sylwia local ·

Seniors get in free at Kyu-Furukawa if you show ID, so check that before paying full price anywhere.

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down
Image helene local ·

Only for Tokyo residents over 65, out-of-towners pay.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Image florine local ·

tbh that free entry is only for over 65s with a juminhyo or similar proof, tourists pay regardless
