Tokyo Marathon 2026: money tips for race day

Should I o… Heads up for anyone running Tokyo Marathon 2026: the start area near the Metropolitan Government Building is basically card and cash only for gear, and some stalls won't take foreign cards. Should I open a Japan bank account before the race or just rely on a travel card and withdraw yen at 7-Eleven ATMs? Also curious how you handle getting paid back by friends if you're splitting costs.

Opening a bank account takes weeks and needs a residence card, so it's pointless for race day. For splitting costs just use PayPay or Line Pay, everyone here has it and you can settle in seconds.

7-Eleven ATMs, skip the bank account.

yeah agreed, though worth knowing the atms inside the start area get hammered from about 7am, so pull your yen the night before at a family mart or yucho. also bring coins for the lockers at the venue

Just use your travel card at the conbini and keep 5,000 yen cash in your shoe bag for the gear stalls.

where to find good bluefin tuna sushi near Tsukiji in 2026

I've had good luck at Sushi Bun in Tsukiji outer market, the honmaguro is still proper there and the set lunch won't gut you. Go before 11 since the counter fills with office workers, not tour groups.

arrow_drop_up 16 arrow_drop_down

Yeah the early start is the real trick there.

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

Get there by ten if you want the toro.

The maguro donburi at Sushi Kanesaka's lunch counter is worth the splurge, though book ahead since they only seat eight.

booked two weeks out last time & the akami don was fine but honestly the shari was the star, go for the rice as much as the fish

eight seats is no joke, we walked in at opening once and still got turned away. try a weekday right when they unlock teh door, that's the only slot that works for me.

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

worth it but go omakase at the counter not the don, the don is a lunch shortcut. reserve through ur hotel concierge, walk-ins basically never land a seat now

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Lunch counter only, dinner's a different booking entirely.

Uogashi Senryo on Harumi-dori does a honmaguro akami set at lunch that locals queue for, roughly 2000 yen.
