shinagawa is fine but try tokyo sea life park in shinagawa too, way quieter on saturdays & the jellyfish room alone is worth the 2500 yen

The jellyfish room is genuinely the best bit, though I'd skip the weekend crowds and go after 5pm when it thins out.

yeah sea life is the sleeper pick. fwiw the penguin feeding around 1pm draws a crowd so go before that or after, and weekdays the ticket desk barely has a line at all.

yep, mornings are dead quiet there

Ikebukuro Sunshine, Tuesday mornings

Sea Life's top floor terrace over the bay is the part nobody mentions, worth the ticket on its own.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

good call on the quieter weekends, though i'd grab the combo ticket with the nearby mall for a few hundred yen more

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

honestly the combo ticket with the mall next door is the actual move, saves u a few hundred yen and you can duck out for lunch. saturdays still get busy after 11 though so go early.

Jellyfish room before noon, no crowd at all.

Maritime Museum Tokyo: worth a visit in 2026?

Is it worth the trip out there, and roughly how long should I set aside for it? Also wondering if the collection is mostly in Japanese or if there's enough English to follow along.

Etchujima, 90 minutes, English signage is patchy.

the audio guide covers most of it

arrow_drop_up 10 arrow_drop_down
Image roselwoll local ·

heads up they rent the guide at the counter for like 500 yen, easy to miss if u walk straight in

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

audio guide is decent but its the recorded stuff only, the wall panels are mostly japanese still. grab it at the ticket window before u go up, they dont always offer. budget extra time if the weather turns, indoor bits fill up fast

arrow_drop_up 16 arrow_drop_down

not the temporary exhibits though, those are japanese only

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

yeah 90 min sounds about right, just dont count on much english beyond the exhibit titles

Ninety minutes is fair but March wind on that Etchujima pier cuts through, so add a jacket and maybe twenty extra minutes indoors.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Only the deck labels got translated.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Agreed on both, though I'd say the patchiness is worse upstairs where the ship models are, the labels there are basically Japanese only. Give yourself a bit more than 90 if you actually want to read things, and the walk from Etchujima station along the canal is a decent ten minutes.

Skip it if the weather's nice, the outdoor deck beats the exhibits and March can still be grim.
