I was walking around and someone at a small garden gate told me I had to pay an entry fee in cash before going in, no ticket or receipt offered. depends where. some small private gardens, especially the ones attached to temples or old estates, do charge a couple hundred yen cash at the gate and you just drop it in a box. no ticket is normal there. but if it was a random guy with no signboard and no price posted, that's off. legit places always have the fee written somewhere visible

The ones with a proper 入口 sign and a little 賽銭箱 are fine, it's the guy with nothing posted who's the problem.

Also watch for a proper 受付 counter or staffed window, since random guys collecting cash at unmarked gates are prob just scamming tourists.

ask to see the kanji sign & the fee box first, since anywhere legit like Kyu-Furukawa or Happo-en posts it at the gate

the crown's fine but i usually walk down to the hub in shibuya for a proper pint, cheaper too. for cards, most places here take visa but amex gets turned down a lot, so i'd carry a visa backup.

Try Mugito in Ebisu if you want a quieter pint, it's a short ride from there. For cards, mine gets declined too so I just bring cash now.

Worth adding that the ATM at the Family Mart on Meiji-dori handles foreign cards later than most, up to 11pm.

yeah carrying yen just makes the night smoother. one thing though, some bars round here only take the old paper bills now, the new ones jam in the machines, so keep a few of those handy
