Are there community garden things around places like Common Place that meet weekly and are open to foreigners? Would rather commit to something recurring than keep doing tourist events.

Check the ward-run shimin noen in Koto and Adachi, they run Saturday morning plots and welcome non-Japanese residents. Also look at city farming volunteer boards at the kuyakusho, some groups meet every week and ask for a small annual fee.

Yeah the kuyakusho boards are where it's at, mine posts weekly

Ota ward board, updated Mondays

Bunkyo and Itabashi run similar noen programs, though Itabashi's volunteer slots fill up fast after the April orientation at the kuyakusho.

I've heard the same about the orientation filling up, so register early if you can. Meguro and Sumida also run noen circles with open volunteer spots most of the year, worth asking there too.

Meguro's slots open first week of the month, fwiw.

the annual fee is usually pretty small, like a few thousand yen, & most groups are fine with basic japanese. ask at the counter which circles still have open spots

Common Place in Yoyogi hosts a monthly garden volunteer day, not weekly, so check their board. For weekly stuff, the Setagaya community garden groups near Sangenjaya are welcoming to foreigners.

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Good shout on the monthly one, and Nakano's ward runs a weekly gardening circle that takes foreign residents too, I think you just sign up at the shimin center.

shimin center signup is in person only, bring residence card

Tokyo rent 2026: what are you actually paying?

Is a decent 1LDK still around 120,000 yen in places like Setagaya or Nakano, or has it crept closer to 150,000? And which areas near good bakeries like Levain are still worth the commute?

I pay 128,000 for a 1LDK in Nakano, five minutes from the station, and I moved in last spring. Setagaya has crept up more because of the redevelopment around Futako-Tamagawa. For Levain bread, I'd look at Sasazuka or Daitabashi, one stop from Shinjuku, quieter, and you can walk to the bakery on weekends.

Worth checking the Nanpeidai side too, quiet but close.

Sangenjaya, 138,000 for a 1LDK.

138k tracks for that side of town, though the walk to Komazawa-dori is what really keeps those units priced where they are.
