Seriously, people say it's like a small department store. I'm planning a whirlwind trip, so I need to know: what's the ONE thing I absolutely MUST buy there to get the full Shinjuku 7-Eleven experience? Is it some crazy limited edition KitKat? A ridiculously oversized onigiri? I need answers!!

the multi-floor one near the west exit is mostly offices, the retail floor is normal size. if you want something actually worth the detour, get the egg sando (tamago sando) and a hot canned coffee from the register, then walk 3 min to the Omoide Yokocho entrance and eat it there. that combo is the real Tokyo konbini ritual, not a KitKat.

that 7-Eleven is at the corner of Yasukuni-dori and Meiji-dori, and yeah its got floors but the store bit is just the ground floor. what people actually sleep on is the fresh food case by the register, not the candy aisle. grab a mentaiko onigiri and the 7-Eleven brand nama pasta (the carbonara one), nuke it at the counter, thats the move nobody posts about. the KitKats are a tourist trap, u can get those at the airport.

honestly that building is just a normal 7-Eleven with a few floors of offices above it, not the shrine people online make it out to be. if you want the actual experience go for the oden at the counter, konnyaku and daikon, grab a can of Strong Zero and eat it on the steps outside. the limited KitKats are everywhere, not special to Shinjuku.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
