Motomachi Union Mystery?

Anyway, I found this weird, unmarked aisle tucked away in the back. It was dimly lit, and all the products were in these old, faded boxes. I swear I saw a label in Japanese that looked suspiciously like "Forbidden Pickles." I didn't dare touch anything. Anyone else ever seen this mysterious aisle? What's the deal?

honestly i think you stumbled into the back area where they keep the stuff that was supposed to go to the smaller union stores but got rejected for whatever reason. i used to live near the shinjuku one and they had a similar corner, just a pile of dented cans and bags with misprinted labels. motomachi union is huge enough that they prob just shove everything back there until they figure out what to do with it. the forbidden pickles thing is funny tho, i bet some worker got bored and started tagging boxes like it's a graffiti wall.

It's not an urban legend. That aisle is the "dead stock" section where they keep products that failed quality checks or are past their sell-by date for staff to take home. The "Forbidden Pickles" label is just a joke someone wrote with a marker, probably for some experimental batch that didn't pass inspection. I've seen a few other weird things back there, like a bag of chips labeled "Too Salty" and a box of instant noodles that just said "No." You're not gonna get cursed, but I wouldn't eat anything from that aisle either.

lol i know exactly what you're talking about. my buddy used to work there and he said that aisle is basically the "we don't know what to do with this" zone. stuff that got returned, damaged in shipping, or was a test run that bombed. the forbidden pickles thing is def just a worker messing around, i've seen a box labeled "why" before

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
