imo the best trick is going on a weekday just before closing, like 8pm in winter or 9pm in summer. you get that transition from sunset to city lights without the pre-sunset crush. the shinjuku side is great but the tokyo tower side lights up real nice too. just check the closing time online first cause it changes with seasons
one thing nobody mentioned yet - the line for the elevator can be brutal even on weekdays. if you go during golden hour like 4:30pm expect to queue 20-30 mins just to get up. my hack is to go around 2pm, hang out in the cafe on the 45th floor for a bit (they have decent coffee and seats by the window), then head up to the observatory around 3:30. you skip the worst of the line and still catch the light changing before sunset
The north observatory is usually less crowded than the south one, so start there. If you go around 3pm on a weekday you'll have plenty of time to watch the city change light before sunset without fighting for window space. The Shinjuku side gives you a better view of the sunset over Mount Fuji if the sky is clear.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?
yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.
kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet
whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
