I've heard it's a super busy area, even at night. My question is, what's the best, safest route for a late-night jog around that area? I wanna get some exercise but don't want to end up lost or in some sketchy alleyway at 2 AM. Any tips from locals who know the area well would be much appreciated!

if u want zero stress just do loops around the central park, it's like 10 min from ur famima and the path is lit all night, plus there's always a few other joggers even at 2am so it feels safe. the only catch is the gates at the north end close at 11, but the south entrance near tokyo metropolitan building stays open, so u can still get in from that side.

another option if u're feeling adventurous, head east toward kabukicho but stay on the main drag, omoide yokocho is a fun detour but it's packed with drunks and smokers, not great for running. honestly the best night run i've done in that area is down the yotsuya side along the outer moat, it's a bit of a walk to get there but the roads are wide and you'll see the tokyo tower in the distance, real peaceful.

just don't bother with the station underpasses after midnight, they smell like pee and there's homeless guys sleeping in the corners, not dangerous but kinda depressing. bring a small headlamp if u can, some of the side paths near the ward office have uneven pavement and a few potholes nobody fixes.

honestly, skip the streets around the station entirely. head north toward okubo, it's a straight shot up yasukuni-dori, and the crowds thin out fast after midnight. the sidewalks are wide, well lit, and you'll pass a bunch of late-night ramen shops that keep the area feeling alive. loop back through the yotsuya side if you want a quieter stretch, it's only like 15 min from your famima.

the park thing is overrated at night, gates close and the perimeter path is boring. better idea: run the east-west stretch along meiji-dori to yoyogi, then cut through the shrine grounds if they're open (they close around sunset, so nope). honestly, just do out-and-backs on yasukuni and loop around the ward office building itself, it's got a decent flat circuit and zero sketchy vibes.

one tip: carry your phone in a zipped pocket, there are a few drunk salarymen stumbling around that time but they're harmless. and skip headphones entirely, you'll hear the trains crossing ochanomizu bridge if you go far enough, that's the good stuff. you'll be fine.

Shinjuku at night is a vibe, no doubt. Busy doesn't even begin to cover it. Sticking to main roads is your best bet for a late-night run, especially around Kuyakusho-dori. You'll be fine near the station and along the wider streets. Avoid the smaller side streets; they get pretty deserted after midnight, and while not necessarily dangerous, they're just not ideal for a solo run that late. Consider using Google Maps to map out a loop along the main arteries, the area around Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden might offer a more pleasant, slightly less frenetic route even at night, though still stick to well-lit paths there too. Remember to be aware of your surroundings, wear reflective gear, and maybe bring some headphones but keep the volume low enough to hear what's going on around you. Enjoy your run!

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
