So much neon, it felt like stepping into Blade Runner. The hotel itself was... spartan, but clean. My question is: any tips on navigating Kabukicho after dark without getting completely lost? It's a maze of tiny streets and bright lights. I felt like I was going to get swallowed up a few times! Also, recommendations for somewhere to grab a decent, non-tourist-trap ramen place nearby would be hugely appreciated.

honestly the toyoko inn is fine for what it is, clean bed and a shower is all you really need in that area. for getting around kabukicho, just pick a landmark that stands out and use it as your anchor. the don quijote with the ferris wheel on top is pretty unmistakable, if you can find that you can find your way back to the main streets.

for ramen, walk towards the hanazono shrine area, there's a tiny shop called soranoiro that does a veggie broth thats super light and refreshing, great break from all the heavy pork tonkotsu places. it's on a side street off yasukuni-dori, easy to miss but worth finding. open late too so works for a post-walk meal

the toyoko inn is a solid choice for the price, you're right about the location being wild. for navigating kabukicho, honestly just embrace getting a little lost, it's part of the fun. use the godzilla head on the toho cinema building as your landmark to reorient yourself, you can see it from most of the main drags.

for ramen, skip the places with touts outside and the ones with english menus plastered on the windows. walk towards shinjuku ni-chome, there's a tiny spot called ichiran on a side street near the golden gai entrance, it's a chain but it's consistent and you order from a vending machine so no awkward pointing needed. or try the tsukemen at fuunji a few blocks east, the broth is thick and rich, way better than the tourist traps near the station

fuunji is the right call but go before 6 or you're queueing 40 min. and ichiran near golden gai is fine for what it is but its not really ni-chome, thats more toward the station side. godzilla head tip is solid tho, works every time.

yeah kabukicho is a trip. for navigating, i use the giant sega arcade signs as my compass, they're everywhere so it's hard to get too lost. for ramen, try the gyoza spot called haruka on the main strip, it's not strictly ramen but their tantanmen is killer and always packed with locals, not tourists

Tokyo rent 2026: what are you actually paying?

Is a decent 1LDK still around 120,000 yen in places like Setagaya or Nakano, or has it crept closer to 150,000? And which areas near good bakeries like Levain are still worth the commute?

I pay 128,000 for a 1LDK in Nakano, five minutes from the station, and I moved in last spring. Setagaya has crept up more because of the redevelopment around Futako-Tamagawa. For Levain bread, I'd look at Sasazuka or Daitabashi, one stop from Shinjuku, quieter, and you can walk to the bakery on weekends.
