It was packed! Crazy busy for a convenience store, but everyone seemed so chill. I grabbed an onigiri and a Calpis. What's the deal with the insane foot traffic there? Is it just because of its location or is there something else drawing in the crowds? Is it secretly a meeting point for ninjas or something?!

fwiw that specific 711 is also right next to the Shinjuku i-Land tower entrance, so you get a ton of office workers from the big companies in there. the morning rush is way worse than afternoon, i've seen the line for the coffee machine stretch past the magazines. also they're one of the few stores that stocks the limited edition kitkats year round, so tourists who know about it swing by just for that.

nah it's not ninjas lol. that specific 711 is basically the gateway to the park AND a major bus stop cluster. you've got the Toei bus stop right there plus people transferring from the Marunouchi line exit. it's a perfect storm of tourists grabbing breakfast and locals grabbing a bento before heading into the gardens or the nearby offices. plus they usually have the freshest egg sandwiches in the area because of the turnover.

It's probably just the Shinjuku effect. That specific 7-Eleven is right near the park entrance and a bunch of offices, so it gets the lunch crowd and tourists all at once.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
