Lost in Translation?

Question

So, I finally made it to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, that behemoth of a town hall. Went up to the observation deck, amazing views, totally worth the elevator ride. But seriously, trying to navigate the building itself felt like trying to decipher ancient hieroglyphs. Everything was so... precisely labeled, but in Japanese, naturally. I wandered around for ages, completely lost, even with my phone's translation app. Anyone else have a similar experience? Did you find any secret passageways or hidden staircases while you were there, or was I just hopelessly clueless?

You're not clueless, that building is genuinely disorienting. The north and south towers look identical inside and the floor numbering doesn't match between them, which throws everyone off. If you go back, take the elevator from the 1st floor lobby directly to the 45th instead of following the signs to the observation deck entrance on 2F, it skips the worst of the confusion. Also the basement level connects to the underground mall at Tochomae station, that's how most staff navigate the building without ever going through the main atrium.

if you went up on a clear day you mightve seen fuji, that's the real payoff. the building's layout is a known headache, but the trick is the north tower observation deck is actually better for photos because the south tower gets the afternoon glare. next time just follow the crowd of salarymen in suits, they always know the fastest route out lol

ngl the best trick for that building is using the elevator numbering system as a guide. the north and south towers have different colored floor indicators if you look closely at the metal plates near the buttons. also the 1st floor lobby has a tiny convenience store tucked behind the info desk, saved me when i needed cash and a snack mid-wander

Yeah, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is a maze! I felt like an ant in a giant, impeccably organized anthill. The signage is... intense. Even with Google Translate, I spent way too long trying to find the *restrooms*. No secret passages for me, just a lot of confused wandering. Next time, I'm bringing a map and a translator. It's funny you say that because the building was actually designed by Kenzo Tange to look like a giant microchip from above. That grid logic makes sense from the sky but on the ground it's a nightmare. I gave up finding the right elevator and just started taking whichever one was open, figured I'd eventually land somewhere I recognized. Ended up in the basement food court that most tourists miss, they have a decent soba place down there that does lunch sets for under 1000 yen.
