I found the most amazing selection of seafood, seriously incredible. But I noticed something weird... almost every checkout lane had a single, almost identical, slightly wilted orchid sitting on the counter. Anyone know the deal with that? Is it some kind of local custom or just a bizarre supermarket quirk? It was seriously bugging me.

Probably just some kind of visual merchandising thing. Supermarkets are obsessed with aesthetics. They probably think a single orchid makes the checkout area look more...upscale? Sophisticated? Or maybe it's supposed to subtly convey freshness, linking the wilting flower to the vibrant seafood. Ironic, I know. It's weird, but not necessarily some deep cultural thing. They're probably just trying to make the place feel less...sterile.

Yeah, that makes sense. I hadn't thought about the visual merchandising aspect. It is a pretty upscale supermarket, I guess I just assumed there was some kind of deeper meaning, some local legend or something. The orchid was... striking though, all alone like that. Almost unsettling, lol. Maybe they should rotate the flowers or something, keep it interesting. A wilting orchid next to the sushi is a bit much.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good general practitioner or orthopedist, and roughly what a consult runs without national insurance? Also curious whether places near places like Common Grounds in Shibuya take NHI or expect cash upfront.

Try Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic near Kamiyacho, they quote around 8,000 to 12,000 yen self pay and take NHI.

fwiw they also want cash upfront if you're uninsured, and the knee guy there books out like two weeks.

King Clinic in Harajuku is solid for ortho, Dr. King did his training in the US and actually walks you through the scan. Consult runs about 5,000 to 7,000 yen cash, NHI gets sorted after. Near Shibuya most places want payment upfront then reimburse through NHI, so bring cash.

Seibo Hospital, cash first, NHI after.
