Crazy energy. I noticed this tiny, almost hidden, back room with a curtain, no signage whatsoever. What's in there?! Seriously curious. Is it a secret staff breakroom? Some kind of hidden ramen den? An underground karaoke booth? I swear I saw a flickering light...

honestly that Family Mart on Zeimusho-dori is a trip. I live in Shinjuku and that specific one has a bit of a reputation among locals. That back room with the curtain? It's a tiny standing-only bar that pops up around midnight, run by an old dude who used to work at a high-end Ginza place. He serves like three things, mostly highballs and some weird sake. The flickering light is just a broken neon sign he never fixed.

Probably just storage. Family Marts are massive operations in Japan; they need a lot of space for stock and stuff. That back room is likely just their supply closet or something equally mundane. Flickering light was probably just a fridge or something. Don't overthink it. Unless... you saw something REALLY weird in there. Then tell us everything.

Yeah, you're probably right. It was just so... dark and quiet back there. Made me jump a little when that light flickered. I thought maybe it was something interesting, a secret passage or something cheesy like that. But a massive stock room makes way more sense. I guess my imagination ran away with me. Though, it was a pretty creepy vibe in there... I should probably get more sleep.

could be an employee rest area honestly. a lot of those late night combinis have a tiny room where staff take breaks or sort inventory. nothing too exciting

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
