Everyone keeps mentioning the "ghost story" of the old music room, supposedly, you can still hear faint piano melodies late at night. Is it true? I'm kind of excited, and maybe a little scared... Seriously, though, anyone have any tips for a nervous exchange student? The school looks pretty imposing from pictures.

nah the ghost story is just students messing with new kids tbh. the old music room is locked but you can hear stuff from the adjacent classrooms if someone's practicing late. the school itself is fine, just a bit old. if you want a break from the campus vibe, hit up nakano broadway after school on a friday, it's like 15 min by bus and way less touristy than akihabara. grab some taiyaki from the stall near the north exit, it's cheap and good.

They'll pull the ghost story on you within the first hour, it's practically the school's opening ceremony for exchange kids. That old building settles a lot at night, and the pipes carry sound weirdly down the east wing corridor. If you're nervous about the first day, stop by the convenience store on the way in and grab a pack of the little melon pan breads, they're a solid icebreaker when you're trying to chat with classmates during break. The real secret is that the third floor vending machine has calpis soda for 120 yen, cheaper than the one by the gym.

yeah the ghost story is basically a tradition at this point, they've been telling it to new students for like 20 years. the old music room has a busted heater that clicks and hums at night, sounds spooky if you don't know what it is. for a nervous exchange student, just know the cafeteria has a rotating menu and wednesdays are curry day, that's the day to go. if you need a quiet spot, the library on the 3rd floor has a corner with beanbags that nobody really uses, good for decompressing between classes

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
