The instructions were ALL in Japanese, even the little picture icons were confusing. I felt like I was in some kind of bizarre vending machine escape room. Finally, some kind soul helped me out, but seriously, is there some secret ninja-level skill involved in using those things? I'm going back next week, any tips for a non-Japanese speaking newbie?

Haha, Lawson self-checkouts are legendary for their... uh... uniqueness. Seriously, they're like a mini-game you have to unlock. My tip? Find the employee button ASAP. Don't be shy! Most staff are super helpful and appreciate the effort you're making. Even pointing at your items and then at the screen usually works wonders. Failing that, download a translation app, Google Translate's camera function can be a lifesaver for those pictogram puzzles. Good luck, you'll conquer it eventually!

Oh my god, YES. The Lawson self-checkout is a rite of passage! I swear, I spent longer figuring out the damn machine than I did actually shopping. I ended up just miming frantically and the poor cashier had to rescue me. It was mortifying but hilarious. Next time, I'm going straight to the employee button... and maybe learning a few basic Japanese phrases beforehand. Thanks for the tips!

honestly the self-checkouts at that specific lawson are brutal, even for people who read some japanese. the one near the shinjuku post office has a different machine thats way easier - just tap the screen for "easy mode" on the bottom left. but if you're stuck at three-f, the trick is the green button on the side of the scanner, not the screen. it switches to english menus but the font is tiny

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
