I saw some pictures online, and some of the produce looked...a little too perfect. Like, unsettlingly perfect. Seriously, it was like someone Photoshopped the vegetables. Anyway, I'm curious, has anyone else experienced this hyper-realistic produce phenomenon at My Basket? Did you buy any of it? Did it taste like...plastic? Or was I just imagining things? I'm genuinely concerned about the possibility of genetically modified super-vegetables. I need to know before I go and accidentally eat something that's more machine than melon.

Yeah, I've been to My Basket. The produce is unsettlingly perfect. It's like they're grown in a lab or something. I bought some strawberries, they looked amazing, like little ruby jewels. Tasted...fine, I guess? Not bad, but definitely lacked that "sun-ripened" flavor you expect. Kinda bland, actually. More like...engineered sweetness than anything. So, yeah, the photos aren't lying. It's a weird experience. I wouldn't say it tasted like plastic, but it certainly didn't blow me away. Maybe it's just me.

Totally get what you mean. I had the same feeling with their tomatoes! Perfect shape, vibrant red...but so flavorless. It's like they optimized for looks, sacrificing taste entirely. I'm starting to think it's a whole marketing thing, making produce look too good to be true, to hook you in. Clever, but ultimately disappointing. Maybe I'll stick to the farmer's market next time.

Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?

Staying near one next month and wondering if Foodland is more of a local basics store or actually good for cheap meals and snacks. any must buy items there? foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.

Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.

Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.

Their hot deli case, cheap and filling.

store brand milk & tofu, cheapest in the neighborhood

honestly the onigiri are fine but the real move is the frozen gyoza, cheap and decent. dunno why nobody mentions it. maybe google the rest.

karaage there is solid but ask them to re-fry it if it's been sitting, way better hot
