But I'm trying to figure out this vending machine outside. It's got all these weird drinks I've never seen before, with pictures that look like they're from a different planet. Seriously, what's in all these colorful, oddly textured cans? I'm too nervous to just grab one... help!?

ngl the ones with the little fruit chunks floating in them are usually aloe drinks, they're sweet and a bit weird texture-wise but ppl go crazy for them. if u see a can that's bright yellow with a lightning bolt that's basically japanese gatorade, good for hangovers. the vending machine near the hotel exit on the left has the seasonal stuff like sakura soda right now, it's mid but the bottle is cute for photos. honestly just chuck a 120 yen coin in and grab whatever has the craziest color, the only truly bad one i've had was this bitter green thing that tasted like lawn clippings

honestly the weirdest ones are prob the best. grab the one that looks like it has a little blob monster in it, that's usually a collagen or aloe drink. the ones in the gold cans are usually coffee with some wild twist, like coffee jelly or matcha. if you want something safe the green tea in a plastic bottle is always solid, look for "Oi Ocha" on the label. also check if that 7-Eleven has the hot food counter in the back, their fried chicken is legit and way better than any vending machine drink

imo just pick the one with the cutest mascot, thats how i roll in japan. worst case u get some weird vitamin water that tastes like a gummy bear's ghost. the vending machine at shinjuku station has a button that plays a little jingle if u press it

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
