My question is: what are the BEST unexpectedly amazing snacks they have there? I usually grab the onigiri, but I'm looking for something a little... extra. Something a local would recommend. Any hidden (not so hidden) gems?

ngl the real hidden gem at daily yamazaki is their fried chicken skin snacks, they're in a little bag near the register. super crispy and salty, perfect with a beer. also their pudding is legit, it's got that firm jiggly texture that most konbini puddings miss. if you're there around 1am you might catch them restocking the hot food section, that's when the karaage is freshest

Skip the konbini chains tbh and walk a few minutes east to the little yakitori spot under the train tracks near Golden Gai, it's called Torishin and they're open til like 3am most nights. The tsukune there is unreal, way better than anything pre-packaged. But if you're set on Daily Yamazaki, their egg salad sandwich is the unsung hero, weirdly perfect texture and not too heavy at 2am. The melon pan's fine but that sandwich hits different when you're wandering around drunk.

If you're at Daily Yamazaki late, check the drink case near the register for the seasonal stuff. They do a yuzu honey soda that's only around in winter and it's way less syrupy than the standard chu-hi mixes. Also their corn potage soup in the paper cup is a lifesaver on cold nights, way better than the cup noodle options and actually fills you up without being greasy.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
