Shinjuku's Midnight Snack?

I've heard Daily Yamazaki is open super late, even past midnight. My question is: what are the best, most uniquely Japanese, snacks or drinks I should grab from a Daily Yamazaki at, say, 2 am? I'm looking for something beyond the usual stuff you'd find anywhere. I want that authentic late-night Japanese convenience store experience... you know?

honestly the weirdest thing you can grab at 2am is the "yakisoba-pan" from the bread section. it's noodles stuffed in a hot dog bun with mayo & red ginger, sounds wrong but hits different when you're stumbling back to your hotel. the egg sando is fine but everyone talks about that, the yakisoba-pan is the real midnight move.

for drinks, check the hot can vending machine near the register, they have corn potage soup in a can. it's salty & sweet & warms u up, way better than coffee at that hour. the "kirin after dark" beer is fine but the hot soup is more of a shinjuku thing tbh. just don't grab the "nattō" onigiri unless u really know what you're doing, that's a morning food for masochists

fwiw the best late night move at Daily Yamazaki is the frozen section, not the hot food. grab a "kaki no tane" ice cream cup - it's vanilla with crispy rice cracker bits mixed in, sounds weird but the salty sweet combo is peak japanese convenience store culture. the regular mochi ice cream is fine but this one's harder to find outside japan

for drinks, look for "Mitsuya Cider" in the glass bottle, it's like a japanese lemon lime soda thats way less sweet than sprite. the bottle itself feels kinda retro too, like something your grandpa would drink. skip the "Fanta" stuff, that's everywhere

also check the chip aisle for "Kappa Ebisen" shrimp crackers in the big red bag, they're addicting and you'll finish the whole thing before you get back to your hotel. the "Pocky" is fine but the shrimp crackers are more of a shinjuku 2am vibe

Yeah, you'll find the basics at any Yamazaki, but the real move at 2 AM is the hot food counter. Grab a "Karaage-kun" fried chicken if they still have it, it's a classic for a reason. The mashed potato croquettes, "korokke," are also solid and vanish fast, so you're lucky if they're in stock that late.

For drinks, skip the beer and look for a "Chuhai" in a can, like the lemon or grapefruit one. They're fizzy, slightly sweet, and way more common in Japan than beer for a late-night snack run. The "Strong Zero" double lemon is a popular choice if you want something with a kick, but it's not for everyone.

Also check the refrigerated section for "tamagoyaki" in a little plastic tray, it's a sweet egg omelette and a weirdly perfect savory snack. Don't bother with the sandwiches, they're fine but not special, the onigiri and fried stuff are where it's at.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
