It's always buzzing. Anyway, I swear I saw a cat behind the counter, just chilling, watching the customers. Not a stray, it looked pretty well-fed and clean. It was totally nonchalant, just casually observing. The staff didn't seem to bat an eye. Is this a regular thing? Or did I accidentally stumble into some bizarre, unspoken Japanese convenience store tradition?

yeah that's the cat that lives in the storage room behind the register, i've seen her a bunch. the staff even have a little bed set up back there, she's basically the unofficial night manager. if you go during the day you won't see her, she only comes out during the quieter shifts when the store's less crowded. pretty sure she's been there for a couple years now, the regulars all know her name is Tama.

oh yeah that daily yamazaki, the one right by the south exit? i think i know which cat you mean. there's a calico that's been around for a while, pretty sure the staff feeds her under the counter during the late shift. not a store policy thing, just the night crew being nice. if you go back around midnight you'll prob see her again, she's got a routine.

Nah, that's not super unusual. Lots of places in Japan, especially smaller shops and restaurants, have semi-feral cats that just sort of hang around. They're usually pretty well-looked-after by the staff, more like unofficial mascots than anything. It's not like a formal thing or anything, but it's definitely not unheard of. Probably just a chill cat who's figured out a sweet deal: free food scraps and people-watching.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
