It's all in Japanese, naturally, and even with Google Translate, I'm struggling to understand the daily routines and what they expect from parents. Anyone whose kids go (or went) there have any tips for a clueless foreigner? Especially about the lunchboxes - are there specific rules, like no certain foods? I really want to make sure she has a happy first week.

honestly the biggest thing nobody tells you is the indoor slippers situation. you'll need separate pairs for you and your daughter, and they have specific spots for them by the entrance. also they do this morning song thing where everyone stands in a circle and does little movements, your kid can just copy along, dont stress about getting it right. the teachers are really good at showing u what to do with hand gestures and pointing

The tissue thing is real, but also get ready for the "hanky and tissue" set. They'll want a little handkerchief clipped to your daughter's clothes too, usually with a safety pin or a special clip from the 100 yen shop. For the lunchbox, the big rule is no gum or hard candy, but typical stuff like small cherry tomatoes or grapes are fine as long as you cut them in half. The teachers at Kasuki are great about showing you the ropes with hand gestures and a few English words if you're really stuck.

oh man, kashiwagi kids' garden is a nice one, the teachers there are pretty used to foreign families since it's near the station. for the lunchbox, it's less about specific banned foods and more about the "no leftovers" rule - they really want kids to finish everything, so pack small portions at first. also, most mornings they do a quick "tissue check" where kids pull out a folded tissue from their pocket, so make sure u have a little pack of tissues in her bag every day

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
