Hyakuninchō Haunting?

I read some old travel blogs mentioning a local legend about wandering spirits near the old willow tree by the river. Anyone know if that's just folklore, or if there's any truth to it? I'm kind of excited, but also maybe a little freaked out. Should I bring a good flashlight? Seriously though, any advice for a solo traveler in Hyakuninchō would be appreciated.

kanda path better past akebonobashi bridge, fewer joggers

Hyakuninchō is a funny one because the name trips people up, it actually means "hundred people town" and the willow story gets recycled every few years in Japanese ghost blogs too. ngl the thing that actually gets visitors is the Korean quarter around Shin-Ōkubo station, which is technically the same neighborhood, so you get this mix of quiet residential lanes and then suddenly a dense strip of yakiniku places and karaoke. if ur solo, that's your move for dinner, just walk north from the station and pick wherever looks busy. no flashlight, but bring a portable wifi or sim since some of the smaller alleys have dead spots

honestly the willow tree thing is mostly just old blog filler. Hyakuninchō is quiet because it's basically a residential pocket between Shinjuku and Yotsuya, not because of spirits. if you want actual atmosphere go at dusk along the Kanda river path near Akebonobashi, the streetlights there are sparse and it feels eerie in a good way. no flashlight needed, your phone is fine.

Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?

Staying near one next month and wondering if Foodland is more of a local basics store or actually good for cheap meals and snacks. any must buy items there? foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.

Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.

Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.

Their hot deli case, cheap and filling.

Check the meat counter, 50% off after 7pm.

store brand milk & tofu, cheapest in the neighborhood

honestly the onigiri are fine but the real move is the frozen gyoza, cheap and decent. dunno why nobody mentions it. maybe google the rest.

karaage there is solid but ask them to re-fry it if it's been sitting, way better hot
