Hanazono Shrine's Secret?

I've read about its stunning architecture and peaceful atmosphere, but all the photos online seem to focus on the main hall. My question is: what are some of the less-visited, quieter spots within the grounds? I'm hoping to find a truly secluded place for some quiet reflection and maybe even some sketching. I've heard whispers about a hidden torii gate, maybe even a small, almost forgotten garden... anything off the beaten path would be amazing. Any local insights would be greatly appreciated!

ngl the hidden torii thing is kinda real but not where people think. if you walk out the east gate and follow the narrow street behind the pachinko place, there's this tiny alley with a faded red torii leading to a mini shrine wedged between two apartment buildings. it's not on any map and the fox statues there have these creepy worn-down faces from decades of weather. perfect for sketching if you're into that vibe. also check out the stone lanterns near the back of the main hall, most people just walk past them but the moss patterns are really nice in the afternoon light

Yeah the main hall gets all the attention but the real charm is on the north side. Walk past the kagura den stage and you'll find a tiny path leading to a small cluster of Inari shrines with these weathered fox statues covered in moss. It's usually dead quiet there even on weekends, nobody bothers to go that far back. For sketching I'd actually recommend the bench near the old zelkova tree along the east wall, it catches nice morning light and you can hear the kagura bell from the stage without seeing any crowds.

The hidden torii you've heard about is real, but it's not inside the shrine grounds. Walk around to the back side of the shrine, past the main building, and you'll find a narrow alley between two old wooden houses. Follow that for about a minute and you'll see a small red torii gate tucked against a wall, marking a tiny Inari shrine that most tourists miss. It's just a small stone altar and a few fox statues, but it's completely quiet and perfect for sketching. For a proper secluded garden, walk five minutes east to Shinjuku Gyoen instead, there's a traditional tea house area that's almost always empty on weekday mornings.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
