I've heard whispers of amazing hiking trails outside the main tourist areas, the kind locals use, not marked on maps. Anyone know where I could find info on these hidden paths? I'm looking for something challenging but not deadly, you know? I'd love to experience a more authentic side of Toyama, away from the usual sights. I'm pretty fit, but don't want to end up lost... or worse.

check out the trail up mount tateyama from the bijodaira side, not the ropeway route. most tourists do the cable car but there's a path that starts at the bijodaira parking lot, goes through the forest up to murodo. it's steep and takes like 6 hours but you'll have the trail mostly to yourself. no english signs past the first kilometer, just old wooden markers with japanese kanji. download the yamap app before you go, it has gps tracks for that route. bring proper boots too, some sections are loose scree and you don't wanna roll an ankle out there

Finding those off-the-beaten-path trails in Toyama can be tricky! Most info isn't online; it's word-of-mouth stuff. Your best bet is probably connecting with local hiking groups, maybe check Facebook groups or even try contacting a local guesthouse. They often have connections with the community and might know some experienced hikers who'd be willing to share tips or even guide you. Don't expect detailed maps though; these are trails locals know instinctively. Also, always let someone know your plans before heading out on any serious hike, especially if it's not well-marked. Safety first!

honestly just go to the kurobe gorge area but skip the tourist train. there's a trail that starts near unazuki onsen station, locals call it the "back route" up to the dam. it's not on any english map but if u ask at the onsen front desk they'll point u to the dirt path behind the temple. takes about 4 hours, steep in parts but nothing technical. bring a headlamp and a gps app, some sections get overgrown late season

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
