I'm usually working late shifts at the nearby office and it's the only place open past midnight that isn't a ridiculously expensive restaurant. Last week I got a killer onigiri there, tuna mayo, I think, and it was so good, it almost made up for the soul-crushing spreadsheets I'd just finished. My question is: does anyone know if they stock those limited-edition melon pan sometimes? I missed out last time, and now I'm haunted by the memory of perfectly crisp crust and fluffy inside... Seriously considering starting a vigil outside the store.

The Kita-Shinjuku Lawson is a solid choice, but if you're that committed to the melon pan hunt, you might have better luck at the FamilyMart a block south on Yasukuni-dori. They tend to get the limited runs first, probably because they're closer to the bus terminal and get more foot traffic. I've seen the seasonal ones pop up there around 10am, not late night, so your vigil might need to be a morning one instead.

I've actually seen those limited melon pans show up at the Lawson near Shinjuku Station's south exit, the one tucked under the Odakyu line tracks. They usually get their truck deliveries around 4am, so if you time it right after your shift ends, you might catch them fresh. The Kita-Shinjuku Three-F one tends to get picked over faster since it's the only game in town for night workers in that area.

ngl the melon pan hunt at lawson is a coin flip even for the regular ones. if you're desperate, try the 7-eleven on the corner of yotsuya 4-chome, they sometimes get the same limited batch a day later when lawson runs out. i grabbed a matcha red bean one there last month around 2am, still warm from their afternoon delivery they must've stashed in the back

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
