I noticed there's a Family Mart right by Shinjuku Kuyakusho-dori. I'm a big fan of onigiri, and I've heard the quality varies wildly between convenience stores in Japan. Anyone know if the onigiri at that specific Family Mart, the one on Shinjuku Kuyakusho-dori, is any good? Worth a late-night snack run? I'm thinking about grabbing some around midnight after a long day exploring... Hope it's not all sold out!

You're overthinking the onigiri at that specific Family Mart. It's fine for what it is, but the real reason to hit that store at midnight is the fried chicken. They keep it hot and fresh later than most places around there, and the karaage musubi they sometimes have is way more satisfying than plain onigiri. If you want the best rice balls in that neighborhood, walk toward the Marunouchi line entrance and check the Lawson near the south end of Shinjuku Gyoen. They get a different delivery schedule and often have the premium mentaiko or the thick-cut tamago that the Family Mart never carries.

ngl that Family Mart is fine for a midnight fix but the onigiri there gets picked over pretty fast. if you're out that late, the 7-Eleven on Yasukuni-dori near the Shinjuku post office restocks around 11pm and their tuna mayo is way better imo. also check the Lawson near the east exit of Shinjuku station, they've got a bigger selection and sometimes have seasonal ones like salmon roe. the Family Mart on Kuyakusho-dori is basically your backup spot if everything else is closed, not a destination

That particular Family Mart is fine for a midnight snack, but the real hidden gem is the 7-Eleven about a three-minute walk west on the same street, near the Nakamuraya bakery. They tend to restock their rice balls around 11 p.m., so you'll usually get the freshest batch right before midnight. If you go to the Family Mart, the mentaiko mayonnaise one is usually the safest bet when everything else looks picked over.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
