My friend, who lives near there, said it's a massive place, seriously, like a small city. He told me stories about getting lost in the hallways... I'm worried about navigating it, especially since I don't speak much Japanese. Any tips for a first-timer? What's the best way to find my way around and not waste half my day just trying to locate the right department? Maybe a secret shortcut or something? I'm already picturing myself running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Hoping it's not as chaotic as he made it out to be.

The colored floor lines are useful, but the real pro move is to use the information desk right inside the main entrance. They speak English well there and will write your destination on a slip of paper with the room number and floor. That slip matters more than a map because some departments have multiple entrances on different floors.

If you're going for a standard check-up, the reception for general health screenings is on the first floor near the west wing cafe. The cafe has decent coffee and a good view of the train tracks if you need a breather. Arrive 20 minutes early to deal with the registration machine, it has an English option but can be slow if you're not used to the touch screen.

Yeah, Shinagawa Hospital is a beast. Seriously sprawling. Your friend wasn't kidding about getting lost. Best bet is to get a really detailed map beforehand, either print one from their website or download it to your phone. Make sure you know your department number and the Japanese characters for it, just in case. Don't rely solely on English signage.

Also, try to arrive a little early. That way, you can get your bearings before your appointment. And don't be afraid to ask for help! Hospital staff, even if they don't speak perfect English, are usually very helpful and patient. Pointing at your appointment slip usually gets the message across. Good luck! You'll be fine.

honestly the english signage is pretty decent inside once you get past the main lobby, they even have colored floor lines that lead to different zones. just follow the color that matches your department on the directory and you'll be fine, no need to panic

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
