My aunt, who lives in the area, says the building itself is kinda...haunted? She wouldn't elaborate, just kept whispering about flickering lights and strange noises at night. Anyone else ever experienced anything unusual there? I'm not exactly scared, but curious... it's a pretty big, old hospital, after all. I mean, weird stuff happens in old buildings, right? I'm mostly worried about the actual surgery, but a little spooky mystery would be...an interesting side-quest, I guess.

lived in tokyo 20+ years and the only thing haunted about shinagawa hospital is the parking situation lol. the old building on the south side had some weird history but they tore it down in like 2016 for the new cancer wing. if ur aunt is really into this stuff theres a walking ghost tour that starts near shinagawa station every friday night, they tell stories about the old execution grounds near the bay. focus on the surgery though, the 5th floor surgical ward has nurses who bring u actual hot tea instead of that instant stuff, that's the real miracle

I've been to Shinagawa Hospital for outpatient visits a few times and never got a haunted vibe, but the basement hallway near the radiology department has this weird echo that makes footsteps sound like they're following you. That's probably just the tile flooring and concrete walls doing acoustic tricks. Your aunt might be thinking of the old Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital in Setagaya, that place actually has a documented history with former patient lodgings that people find unsettling. The recovery area on the third floor has decent natural light and the nurses there are known for being particularly attentive, which matters more than any flickering light.

fwiw i work at a clinic near there and i've done a few dropoffs at Shinagawa Hospital for patient records. never heard any ghost stories from the staff but the basement level is creepy af, just fluorescent lights that hum weirdly and that hospital smell x10. prob just the morgue being down there though, no big deal. the main building is actually pretty chill during the day, lots of natural light in the waiting areas. your aunt might be thinking of the old isolation ward that got torn down like 15 years ago, that place had some weird history with the 1918 flu outbreak. keep an eye out for the vending machines on the 2nd floor near the cafe, they sell this really good melon soda that's hard to find anywhere else in Shinagawa

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
