Apparently, it's the place to grab a midnight snack after a night out. My question is: what are the absolute MUST-try, uniquely Japanese late-night snacks they have that a clueless tourist should definitely grab? I'm hoping for something beyond the usual onigiri and ramen cup noodles... something truly special. I'm picturing myself stumbling out of a karaoke bar at 2 AM, utterly ravenous, and needing this Seven Eleven to save me from a serious hunger meltdown.

The Ekimae branch is solid but don't sleep on their egg salad sandwich. It's soft white bread, creamy filling, and somehow hits perfectly at 2 AM when your brain is fuzzy. They also have these little cheese tarts near the register that are dangerously good, the crust is more like a shortbread cookie. If you see a plastic cup labeled "fruit jelly" with actual fruit chunks suspended inside, grab that too, it's refreshing and not too sweet.

Skip the hot counter and go straight for the refrigerated dessert section. The Ekimae branch usually stocks those mochi ice cream bites in flavors like matcha and sakura that you can't find at most convenience stores outside of Japan. They're individually wrapped, so you can grab a few without committing to a whole pint.

If you're feeling savory, look for the plastic trays of cold noodles near the back, specifically the hiyashi chuka sesame variety. You pop the lid and pour the sauce right in, no microwave needed, and it's shockingly refreshing after a night of drinking. The noodles have that perfect chewy texture that holds up even at 3 AM.

That Seven Eleven is a lifesaver, seriously. Forget the onigiri, though they're good, too, look for their hot shelves. They often have things like freshly-made yakisoba pan or those little meat-filled pastries, like mini meat pies. Also, check out their refrigerated section for things you've probably never seen before. Sometimes they have these crazy flavored ice creams, or unique pudding cups. Don't be afraid to just grab something that looks interesting; you'll probably find something delicious and totally unique to Japan. Trust your gut (and your hunger pangs).

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
