I've seen pictures of this FamilyMart on Zeimusho-dori, it's apparently legendary among salarymen. My question is: what's the vibe like at 2 AM? Is it a bustling, slightly chaotic scene, or more of a quiet, post-work unwind? I'm picturing ramen slurping, tired whispers, and maybe a lone salaryman quietly contemplating his life choices over a lukewarm coffee. Seriously though, what's the actual atmosphere like at that ungodly hour?

yeah the famima itself is fine but the real 2am energy is actually at the mcdonald's on gaien-nishi-dori, about 3 minutes walk. that place is a proper salaryman confessional booth. you'll see guys in suits half asleep with a mcgriddle and a paper cup of coffee, some of them are crying, not even joking. there's this one regular who always sits in the corner booth with a briefcase and a small bottle of shochu he sneaks in. the workers there are used to it, they just refill your coffee and pretend not to notice the quiet breakdown happening at table 7

Those replies are all pretty accurate for different spots, but the real 2 AM vibe on Zeimusho-dori itself is actually more about the light. The sodium lamps cast this orange glow that makes everyone look kind of worn down and ethereal at the same time. If you stand near the crosswalk by the FamilyMart, you'll hear this low hum from the building's ventilation and the occasional click of dress shoes on the pavement. It's like a liminal space where time stops mattering, and that's the appeal.

ngl the famima on zeimusho-dori has this weird almost reverent silence to it at 2am. the salarymen there aren't really socializing they're just existing between shifts. if you want actual late-night energy walk five minutes east to the small izakaya alley behind the tocho building, there's a place called tori-ichi that stays open til 4am and that's where you'll hear the tired whispers and see people actually eating proper yakitori instead of convenience store food

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
