I spent the afternoon wandering around, getting completely lost in the maze of tiny streets. Found this amazing little ramen shop tucked away, best broth I've ever had, but then I couldn't find my way back to the station. Seriously, the GPS on my phone was useless. The houses all look the same! Anyone else experienced this? Any tips for navigating Matsunoki without getting utterly disoriented?

one weird thing that helps me is the convenience stores. there's only two in matsunoki, a 7-eleven near the station and a FamilyMart deeper in. the 7-eleven has a green sign that you can see from like three blocks away if you're at the right angle. also the ramen shop you found, if it's the one with the handwritten menu board out front, they do a limited tsukemen on wednesdays that's honestly better than their regular bowls

ngl the best trick i've found is just counting the intersections from the station, like each turn you take remember how many streets you passed. the streets are all named but nobody uses them, the neighborhood association numbers are painted on the utility poles instead. if you hit a dead end with a little jizo statue you've gone too far east, that's the boundary before the next ward. also the ramen shop prob has a whiteboard outside with the daily specials, that's a better marker than the blue noren since half the shops in setagaya have blue noren

Off-peak hours are actually your friend here if you want to use train noise. The Keio line gets quiet enough between 1 and 4pm that you can hear the rumble of the tracks from a surprising distance, but during rush hour the sound just blends into everything else. I usually aim for the FamilyMart near the station as my anchor point because it's the only one with a blue awning instead of the standard green, makes it easier to spot from a few blocks away. And if you end up at that ramen shop again, try the shio broth instead of the shoyu, the owner's wife makes the salt blend herself and it changes the whole bowl.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
