Shinjuku Convenience Store Mystery?
Oh yeah, that cat. I've seen it too, usually near the bike parking around that Family Mart. There's a small pet grooming place two streets over on the way to the Yotsuya exit that does themed outfits, I think a few of the local shopkeepers chip in to dress it up. It's been around for at least a couple years now, definitely not a hallucination. If you want a good late-night spot that's less chaotic than the scramble, the soba shop on the corner of the Zeimusho-dori and the side street is open until 4am and the staff will probably tell you the cat's whole backstory.
It's actually a known local character. That specific Family Mart is right next to the tax office, so the rumor is the cat used to hang around there so much it absorbed the vibe. I've seen it a few times myself near the entrance by the bike parking. If you want a real Shinjuku mystery, check out the underground passage connecting Shinjuku Station to that block, there's a tiny ramen stand tucked in a corner that doesn't show up on Google Maps.
Tokyo's nightlife is intense. I've seen weirder things after a few too many highballs in Shibuya. Probably just a very well-dressed cat. Or maybe the ramen really was that good. Don't overthink it, unless you want to start a whole new conspiracy theory about feline corporate espionage in Shinjuku. Then, by all means, go for it. Let me know how that investigation goes.

Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?
foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early
Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.
Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.
Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.
