Hyakuninchō's Hidden History?

The history books mention it being a pretty significant place back in the Edo period, a bustling merchant area apparently. My question is: are there any remnants of that older Hyakuninchō still visible, maybe tucked away in some quiet corner? I'm hoping to find some little alleyway or building that whispers of the past, not just shiny new stuff. I'm imagining stumbling across a tiny shrine or an old well... you know, something atmospheric! Really excited about the trip

ngl the shrine behind the pachinko place is cool but if u want old vibes walk down yokochō around dusk when the izakayas start lighting up. the lanterns and chatter make it feel way more edo than daytime does. also there's a small soba shop on the corner near the post office that's been there since the 1920s, the facade is all dark wood and noren curtains. the owner's family has run it for three generations, and the interior still has the original charcoal hearths. grab a bowl of their hot soba and just watch the street, you'll feel the old quarter come alive a bit

The Inari shrine the other person mentioned is a solid find, but there's also a small plaque on the wall of a convenience store near the Shinjuku-dori intersection. It marks the site of a famous Edo-era well that supplied water to the whole merchant quarter, but the well itself was filled in decades ago. Walk a few steps north from there and you'll see a narrow alley called Hyakuninchō Yokochō, barely wide enough for two people. It's lined with a mix of old wooden townhouses and newer shops, and if you look up, you can spot the original tiled rooflines that survived the war.

honestly the best hidden gem in hyakuninchō is the small inari shrine tucked behind the pachinko parlor on the main street. it's easy to miss because the entrance is just a narrow gap between buildings. the shrine itself is tiny and feels completely out of place with the modern stuff around it. also check out the old wooden kura storehouse near the roppongi-dori crossing, it's been converted into a small gallery now but the structure is original. most tourists walk right past it.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
