Last time I was there, I swear I saw a dude buying a live lobster, then just casually strolling out. No bag, nothing. Anyone else ever witness anything similarly bizarre at My Basket? I'm planning another trip, and I'm kinda hoping for some more weirdness. Maybe a chihuahua wearing a tiny hat pushing a shopping cart...

oh man, my basket is a whole vibe. i once saw an old lady casually pull a full on kitchen knife out of her bag to cut a piece of fruit she wanted to sample, and the staff just nodded at her. also the cashiers are insanely fast, like theyre trying to break a personal record every transaction. if you want more weirdness try going right after 8pm when the bento discounts start, people literally sprint through the aisles like it's the hunger games

My Basket is intense. I once saw a guy buy a single, perfectly ripe mango and then meticulously inspect it for five minutes before paying. Five minutes! The line behind him was epic. I also saw a woman arguing with a cashier about the price of...wasabi peas? It was a whole thing. So yeah, weird stuff happens there all the time. Prepare yourself for sensory overload. And maybe bring a snack, that line can be brutal.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
