Wrong. The attendant, bless his cotton socks, couldn't speak a lick of English and my Japanese is...well, let's just say it involves a lot of pointing and hoping for the best. I ended up paying way more than I should of, I think. Anyone know a good way to check if I got totally ripped off at a gas station in @Tokyo? I'm planning another trip soon and want to avoid this fiasco.

Oof, that sucks. Gas station scams are a pain anywhere, but especially frustrating when the language barrier's involved. There's no foolproof way to retroactively check your @Tokyo gas bill, unfortunately. Next time, try using a gas station app like Rakuten Pay or even Google Pay, they usually show the price upfront and give you a digital receipt. Learning a few basic Japanese phrases for gas station interactions (like "gasoline," "full tank," and "total price") might help too. For future trips, maybe look for larger chain gas stations in more touristy areas, they might have more English-speaking staff. Lesson learned, though, always double-check the price before paying, even if it feels awkward.

Yeah, totally sucks. I should've been more careful. I was so tired after that long drive from @Kyoto, I just wanted to get gas and get to my hotel. Rakuten Pay sounds like a good idea, I'll definitely download that before my next trip. And yeah, those basic phrases are a must, I only knew enough to ask for gas. Live and learn, I guess! Thanks for the tips.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
