Finding the Best Onigiri

My question is: what's the secret to finding the freshest, most delicious onigiri there? I've heard rumors... whispers of a particular employee who crafts the absolute best ones, almost magically. Any tips from locals? It's gotta be more than just picking the ones closest to the back, right? I'm aiming for onigiri nirvana!

people sleep on the kombu onigiri at that specific family mart because it's right next to the employee break room and they grab them first. if you see a gap in the kombu row, ask the cashier when the next batch is coming, they know the schedule better than anyone. also the spicy cod roe one is usually made in smaller batches so it sells out by noon, that's the one worth hunting for

honestly the employee whisper thing is a fun bit of folklore but the real trick is timing. Family mart Takano Nishishinjuku gets a delivery around 5:30am and again around 2pm, the afternoon batch tends to be less picked over. I always go for the mentaiko or the tuna mayo with the nori still in the wrapper, that crisp seaweed is the tell. also if you see a staff member restocking the rice balls just ask them which one came in fresh, they'll usually point you to the right one.

skip the family mart for onigiri nirvana, honestly. walk two blocks east to the 7-eleven on yotsuya 4-chome, their rice is consistently fluffier and they have a seasonal mentaiko that the famima doesn't stock. the real move is to buy one from the hot case if they have the grilled salmon onigiri, the one wrapped in foil. that's the employee's special batch made fresh in the back, costs like 150 yen and comes out steaming. timing matters less than location for this specific quest

Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?

Staying near one next month and wondering if Foodland is more of a local basics store or actually good for cheap meals and snacks. any must buy items there? foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.

Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.

Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.

Their hot deli case, cheap and filling.

store brand milk & tofu, cheapest in the neighborhood

honestly the onigiri are fine but the real move is the frozen gyoza, cheap and decent. dunno why nobody mentions it. maybe google the rest.

karaage there is solid but ask them to re-fry it if it's been sitting, way better hot
