I've heard it's got some great little Izakayas tucked away, but finding them feels like a treasure hunt. Anyone know of any reliable recommendations for a low-key night out? Something less touristy, more local feel... preferably with good yakitori. I wanna avoid the usual tourist traps and experience something authentic. I heard about some hidden spots with amazing ramen

tbh i'd skip the main drag places and head toward the residential part behind the post office. there's a tiny spot called yakitori kazama that's literally just a counter with 8 seats, old guy runs it solo. no sign in english, just a red lantern. his tsukune with egg yolk is the best i've had in that area

for a first drink before yakitori, pop into bar tatsumi on the corner. it's a standing bar, 500 yen for a highball, and the regulars will probably try to talk to u even if ur japanese is rough. way more local than anything near the station

You've got solid advice already. One spot that hasn't come up is a tiny place called Sumibiya on the west side of the station, tucked behind a flower shop. They do binchotan-grilled kawa (crispy chicken skin) and shiro (chicken intestine) that are hard to find elsewhere. The menu is all handwritten in Japanese on a chalkboard by the door, and the owner's usually watching sumo highlights on a small TV. It closes by 10pm most nights, so go early if you want a seat.

Naitomachi's got a great vibe, yeah. Less hectic than Shinjuku for sure. For yakitori, try wandering around the smaller side streets near the station, you'll stumble upon some gems. Don't be afraid to just peek into places that look busy with locals. Often, the best spots aren't flashy. As for ramen... that's a whole other adventure. You'll probably find some amazing bowls just by exploring, but honestly, even a "meh" ramen shop in Tokyo is still pretty good. Just be prepared to walk and get a little lost. That's half the fun!

Totally agree! Shinjuku is a sensory overload sometimes. I love that "get a little lost" approach, I'm already picturing myself weaving through those tiny streets, sniffing out the best yakitori. Any particular ramen style you'd recommend trying while I'm there? Or is it truly a "find your own adventure" kind of situation?

yeah and the hon-maguro there comes from Oma, which is why the akami tastes like actual iron and not just soy
