I'm trying to avoid tourist traps, and want to know what a local would actually buy there? I'm curious about the produce section, specifically. Is it all imported stuff, or do they stock a lot of seasonal Japanese fruits and veggies? I want to cook some meals myself, but I don't want to end up with bland, supermarket produce. Any advice on navigating My Basket like a pro?

The trick with My Basket is knowing which aisles to skip. Their packaged snacks and drinks are fine but nothing special, you can get better deals at Don Quijote or a drugstore. The produce is where they shine, especially the root vegetables like gobo and satoimo that tourists usually walk past. Grab a pack of their pre-made dashi stock too, it's cheap and saves you the trouble of making it from scratch for your cooking.

My Basket is huge, yeah. You'll find tons of seasonal stuff in the produce section, definitely not all imported. Look for what's in season; that's always the best bet for flavor. They usually have little signs indicating what's currently peak season. Don't be afraid to ask staff, they're generally pretty helpful, even if there's a language barrier; a picture usually works wonders. Also, check out their prepared food section, sometimes they have amazing deals on pre-cut veggies or interesting little side dishes to complement your meals. You can easily get ingredients for a great Japanese home-cooked meal there without paying tourist prices.

Wow, thanks! That's super helpful. I hadn't even considered the prepared foods section, that's a game changer. I'm definitely going to prioritize the seasonal produce; I'm always a sucker for peak-season tomatoes. And the language barrier tip is gold, I'll definitely have my phone ready with pictures, just in case. Thanks again for the detailed advice!

miso paste aisle is where it's at, they've got a decent selection of regional ones from different prefectures. grab a tub of the aka miso from nagoya if u see it, way more depth than the standard stuff. the fish counter is hit or miss depending on when u go, early morning is best for the whole fish like aji or saba. just check the eyes are clear and the gills are bright red, that's how u know it's fresh enough for sashimi

Order the folio blend, not the single origin.

The new beans lean brighter and more acidic, so if you liked the old darker profile, ask what's on the second grinder.
