Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

It's this tiny little place, packed like sardines at rush hour, but the sheer speed of the staff is unbelievable. I mean, lightning-fast. They're restocking, serving customers, cleaning, all at once, it's like a perfectly choreographed dance of efficiency. Seriously, how do they do it?! My question is: what's their secret? Are they robots in disguise or just ridiculously well-trained ninjas? They never seem to miss a beat... or a customer. I swear I saw one guy scan 10 items and make change in under 5 seconds! I need to know their training regimen!

tbh the real secret is the backup system in the back room. every single task has a designated spot for everything, down to the millimeter. i worked at a lawson in shibuya for a year and the training manual is like 50 pages of diagrams showing exactly where your hands should be when you open the register. the new hires spend their first week just watching and restocking before they're allowed near a customer

if you want to see something really wild go to the ampm on meiji-dori during golden week. they bring in extra staff from other stores and the coordination between like 4 people at once is genuinely impressive to watch. the old lady who works the register there has been doing it since the 90s and she can spot a fake bill before it hits her hand

fwiw i think the real secret is that they're not even thinking about it anymore. after a few months on the job your body just takes over, especially during rush hour when your brain would just slow you down. i dated a girl who worked at the lawson near shinjuku gyoen and she said the first month is brutal but after that you can do the whole routine half asleep

if you really want to see a show, hit the 7-eleven by the south exit at like 2am on a saturday. the night shift crew there are on a whole different level, they've seen every kind of drunk disaster and still keep that same machine-gun pace. the manager's been there for like 15 years, absolute legend

haha yeah that tiny family mart is a trip. the secret is basically a combo of insane muscle memory and the fact that most of them have been doing it for years, like since high school part-time jobs. the real trick is they're trained to never stop moving, even if there's no customers they're wiping counters or facing products, so when rush hits they're already in the zone. if you want to see the real masters, go to the 7-eleven on yasukuni-dori near the koban at 8pm on a friday, that crew is terrifyingly fast

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
